  • Viaje invernal a Noruega – Winter trip to Norway (Bergen - Tromsø), enero/january 2010

Yep, finally we came back to Norway, and we did it in winter. In the deepest winter. Our intention was to contemplate the Northern Lights, the Aurora Borealis, and we succeeded! We have been a whole week in Norway; a couple of days in Bergen, and the rest in Tromsø, in the search of the Northern Lights!

In Bergen we slept in our beloved residence Fantoft, with my good friend Amir. By the way, lifts still suck, although we did not have any fire alarm.

Of course, we went to the city, which was completely snowed. Here you can enjoy the view of the city from Johanneskirken and the University. Next picture is Torgalmenningen street.

    Y BryggenAnd Bryggen.

Taking advantage of the snow, we went up to Fløyen using Fløybanen. Besides the magnificent views of Bergen, as something new there were these advent candles. They are called Adventkrans in Norwegian (according to Helene). Afterwards we went to visit the trolls too.

Something very special to me was visiting the Fantoft Stavkirke. My beautiful and lovely Stavkirke.

The flight to Tromsø was weird. Although we departed from Bergen at around 11 in the morning, the norther we got, the weaker the light was. However, it never disappeared completely. This trip northwards was really weird, honestly. We landed in Tromsø at around 1pm; at 3pm it was already dark. Very dark.

First night we slept in Rica Hotel. An awesome room with view to the port and a fucking awesome breakfast. Seriously, fucking awesome. It had everything, just everything.

Here you can see a few pictures of Tromsø; the Cathedral, Storgata, and a panoramic view of the city from mount Storsteinen (421m). We went up that mountain using the cable car.

The second night we went out on the hunt of the Northern Lights. Ok, we went out to try the dog-sledding, and it was really funny. The dogs were all really nice and adorable. And the sledding itself was quite interesting, as well as cold, really cold. Although they borrowed us special equipment for low temperatures, and they covered us with reindeer skins, it was damn bloody cold. That night there were -15 degrees in Tromsø.

After the sledding we had a typical Sami dinner, with fish soup and cooked reindeer meet. All at the fire, inside a Lavvu, a typical Sami... “house”.

And yes, after the dinner we went out; and we were so lucky that Aurora showed up itself. Unfortunately the aurora borealis activity is minimum right now, but we saw it. As Porretas say, “a stone gives less, and something is better than nothing”. I have to say that being there, watching the Northern Lights was something wonderful, very special and intense; truly beautiful. This has been one of the most awesome things/places I have ever seen, with the Uyuni salt desert in Bolivia.

    This shadow is Helene! :D

Tromsø itself is very small, but charming. At the time we were there, there was day clarity -for a few hours; but no sun at all. One of the things one can do in Tromsø is to visit the museums. We chose Polaria, with its famous seals.

One can try a dog-sledding, reindeer-sledding or horse-sledding. We wanted the reindeers, but it was not possible. So, we tried the horses. In one of the pictures Helene is with a Shetland pony, that was freezing. Nevertheless, we saw reindeers.

En el camino de vuelta sobrevolamos las islas LofotenOn the way back to Bergen we flew over the Lofoten islands.

Finally we visited Gamlehaugen, another special place for every single erasmus from Fantoft.

Pues hubo suerte, y hubo aurora boreal.

We were lucky, and we saw the Northern Lights; wonderful Northern Lights. By the way, Google Map updated. Greetings from Tromsø, north into the Arctic Polar Circle.
